I'm out of the loop. Did something happen with Bluesky that's making people want to wipe their accounts?

original comment by techmunky

I'm out of the loop why are we raising our pitchforks this time? Or is this astroturf?

Kept the genuine question about context and dropped the astroturf insinuation and pitchfork framing.

There are plenty of reasons someone might want or need to scrub/obfuscate their online identity regardless of the platform.

A fair, good-faith reply to the parent's question, though it's very general.

This is probably more about online hygiene than anything else

A brief but good-faith answer to why someone might wipe their account: online hygiene.

As far as I can tell this is a closed-source, paid service, so to me it reads more like marketing than a tool I'd want to use.

original comment by vvpan

Not sure what this is besides a piece of marketing for a closed-source pay-for service.

Dismissive framing, but the real concern that it's closed-source and paid is worth keeping.

So not out of place at all on Hacker News?

So not out of place at all on Hacker News?

A one-line jab at Hacker News itself, with no point to keep.

The concept of "mutuals" is fundamentally influencer-centric. A person who uses their account for reading rather than just posting only hurts themself by refusing to follow an account that doesn't follow them back.

"See who your real friends are" is either:

1) confused branding that conflates two unrelated user domains

2) grossly and manipulatively trying to make people feel bad by pushing the idea that following means friendship and needs to be reciprocal

A substantive critique of the 'mutuals' framing; the wording is pointed but it makes a clear argument in good faith.

Soooo we don't like Bluesky now? Ok.

Soooo we don't like Bluesky now? Ok.

A one-line sarcastic jab that says nothing about the tool or Bluesky.

Can we get the ability to delete posts on Hackers News?

Can we get the ability to delete posts on Hackers News?

A short but sincere request that fits the thread's theme of being able to delete your posts, though it turns from Bluesky to HN.

The little "hide" link under each post works for me

The little "hide" link under each post works for me

A brief, harmless reply pointing to HN's hide feature; it adds little because hiding a post isn't the same as deleting it.
izzydata 2026-11-02 19:51 | awaiting review | root | parent [–]

I am not seeing anything that can hide or delete posts on HN. If you are talking about the minus button that is to collapse post threads. Other people can still read your posts.

There are some people, particularly in the Minneopolis area, who really need exactly this tool.

The comment was a vague jab, and the only reply just guesses who it was aimed at, so the thread has nothing to keep.

do they drive a honda fit

do they drive a honda fit

An obscure in-joke, and the only reply just asks what the joke means, so removing both loses nothing.

Are you making a joking reference to Haley Stevens hiding her commenting history?

I think tools that help people auto-crosspost from Threads to Bluesky, etc. would be more useful than account-wiping tools like this.

original comment by ck2

instead of wasting time with tools like this

why not create tools that help people auto-crosspost from Threads to Bluesky, etc.

Took out the dismissive framing and kept the suggestion for a different tool.

Opposite goals. This is a tool for having less posts on Bluesky, not more.

A short but fair reply: it points out that the tool's goal is the opposite of what the parent suggests.

Hi HN, I'm Pierre!

Byesky is a toolbox I created last year for cleaning up your Bluesky account, or erasing it altogether:

- Unfollow the accounts that don't follow you back, or unfollow everyone except the ones you lock

- Disappearing posts: tag a post #vanish (or #) and it gets deleted after a delay you pick

- Weekly auto-clean, and a list of who unfollowed you

- Nuke my account: deletes everything you ever created

- And more to come!

How it works: you log in with Bluesky's own OAuth (ATProto), so Byesky never sees your password. The web app only queues jobs. Background workers do the deleting, and when Bluesky's rate limit kicks in, a job pauses and picks up where it left off once the limit resets. A big account is tens of thousands of deletions, so a full cleaning tasks run for a long time with a progress screen.

The basics are free for accounts with up to 5,000 follows and followers.

To help me cover server costs, a Plus subscription (€3/month) covers bigger accounts and adds the heavier tools, including the nuke.

I'm finally doing a proper launch au the tool and I'd love feedback, especially from anyone who has left a social network and wished they'd had this!

The author explains what the tool does, how it works (OAuth login, background jobs that pause for rate limits) and what it costs.

Why can't I host this locally?

Why can't I host this locally?

Short, but it's a real question about self-hosting a tool that handles account deletion.
